Sunfoil Cape Town Big Walk 2016 Launched
Cape Town now has its very own Big Walk. A major transformation has been underway behind the scenesof one of Cape Town’s most popular annual events. At the media launch held at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa on Wednesday evening, it was announced that the event would now be known as the Sunfoil Cape Town Big Walk. A new presenting sponsor, Spur Steak Ranches, has also come on board.
The walk sports a fresh new look, with the new logo and brand identity revealed on the evening. ‘The rebrand reflects the 16 year history and evolution of the Big Walk, and its vision to become one of the largest events on the Mother City’s social calendar,’ said Marketing Manager Parveen Banderker. The event has two distances, a 5km route and the more popular 10km route. Starting at the forecourt of the Cape Town Stadium, the scenic walk makes its way along the Sea Point promenade and finishes inside the Green Point track. ‘Cape Town is a global destination and a wonderfully diverse metropolis. It’s a place people want to live, work and visit. We felt that there was a natural fit between our event and the Cape Town brand, and going forward, the Cape Town Big Walk will anchor itself as one of the city’s truly iconic events,’ said Banderker.
Event Director, Dr. Elias Parker says that the Big Walk has become a social and cultural institution in it’s own right. ‘We’ve always been very proud of the fact that our Big Walk is inclusive, for everyone in the community. With the exciting new changes, we are confident that our event will continue to grow,’ said Parker.
Willowton Chief Commercial Officer Shoaib Moosa said, ‘Our company has been involved with the Big Walk over the past four years. We are delighted to once again support an event where the benefits are twofold: charity and the promotion of healthy, active lifestyles. The event gives family and friends an opportunity to get active and enjoy a scenic walk with the beautiful views of Sea Point.’ ‘Sunfoil, as a brand, promotes a balanced diet and getting consumers active. The Big Walk gives us the opportunity to engage with our consumers and introduces our basket of products to potential consumers,’ concluded Moosa.

The Big Walk has a long-standing commitment to fundraising and supporting charity organizations. When the walk was established in 2000, its primary objective was to raise funds for the Red Cross Children’s Hospital and the Islamic Library, who have benefitted immensely from the fundraising efforts. With the launch of the new brand, there was an opportunity to widen the capacity of the fundraising division. Thus, the Cape Town Big Walk Foundation was launched.
Under the new three-tier structure, funding will be channeled towards existing beneficiaries but also other new projects and charity organizations that are aligned with the Big Walk’s support pillars of education, fitness and health. A programme of activities will be sustained throughout the year, including book collection drives, a focus on healthy eating and outdoor fitness activities.
